‘Modern Polio’ Cases Confirmed in 16 States

girl in a wheelchair

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 38 confirmed cases of a severe polio-like disease in children known as acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in the United States from January through September of this year. A total of 16 states have reported cases of the condition, also referred to as acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) or non-polio acute flaccid paralysis (NPAFP). Colorado has reported 14 cases and Minnesota has reported six.1 2 3

A study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics in 2012, described AFM as “clinically indistinguishable from polio paralysis but twice as deadly”2 3—leading some to dub the disease ‘modern polio.’4 5

The cause of AFM is not known, although there have been correlative links between the disease and enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) and enterovirus A71 (EV-A71). Of the 14 cases in Colorado, at least nine of them have been linked to EV-A71.1 Enteroviruses are viruses that enter the body through the gastrointestinal tract and often move on to infect the nervous system. The poliovirus is an enterovirus.6

According to the CDC, AFM “affects the nervous system, specifically the area of spinal cord called gray matter, which causes the muscles and reflexes in the body to become weak.” Most people who develop AFM will experience a “sudden onset of arm or leg weakness and loss of muscle tone and reflex,” states the CDC. Some people will have “face droop/weakness, difficulty moving the eyes, drooping eyelids, or difficulty with swallowing or slurred speech.”7

The CDC adds:

Numbness or tingling is rare in people with AFM, although some people have pain in their arms or legs. Some people with AFM may be unable to pass urine (pee). The most severe symptom of AFM is respiratory failure that can happen when the muscles involved with breathing become weak. This can require urgent ventilator support (breathing machine). In very rare cases, it is possible that the process in the body that triggers AFM may also trigger other serious neurologic complications that could lead to death.7

The CDC began tracking AFM in 2014.8

“In early 2014, neurologists at Stanford and University of California reported five cases of sudden paralysis of one or more limbs in children ages two to 16—all fully vaccinated against polio—and the California Department of Health of Health began investigating 20 more similar cases. Two of the five children tested positive for [EV-D68],”2 wrote Barbara Loe Fisher in 2015 in The Vaccine Reaction.

“During the summer of 2014, many more apparently healthy American children in several states, including Colorado, Missouri, Michigan and Massachusetts, were reported to be suddenly stricken with paralysis after developing cold and flu-like symptoms. Several died and, although some of the cases were associated with [EV-D68], others were not.”2

A total of 120 cases of AFM were confirmed in the U.S. in 2014, followed by 22 in 2015, 149 in 2016 and 33 in 2017.1

In early October 2018, three suspected cases of AFM were reported at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.9 The hospital issued the following statement: “UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is taking care of three children with suspected Acute Flaccid Myelitis. The patients are currently undergoing diagnostic procedures and treatments. Isolation protocols and infection control procedures are in place and we are working with the CDC and the Allegheny County Health Department to further monitor and evaluate the patient conditions.”10

  1. How much of this is caused by the vaccination? This has been reported by parents after their child had an adverse reaction to the vaccine. Is it possible polio has just been given a new name?

    1. The initial symptoms are slightly different, as is the progression of the disease process; so it is a different disease process most likely but similar in nature and how it spreads from one to the next. Didn’t think I’d be seeing this again, but here it is. Original polio had a kind of flu or cold like onset with the paralysis showing up a bit later.

    2. There IS information in regard to how the names of diseases are changed to ‘protect the
(not so) innocent’ so to speak. Polio is one which, if you research, will show the name has been changed.

  2. What do these stories mean to parents of non vaccinated children? One of the constant challenges against vaccines, is so many of them are not necessary since they are for recoverable ailments. Do we want a singular polio vaccine though? Would it do any good, the article states all were vaccinated. Please advise.

  3. I think it is vaccination related. If we can find out from the parents which vaccines these children received….and the lot numbers, etc. – I think we will find the Answer. My heart breaks for these families. My sister & I got Polio vaccines back in the 50’s. My sister was fine – but I developed leg problems……and Doctor wanted to put me in braces – my Parents refused. Had Leg & low spine problems – but basically fine. My son almost died from Vaccines in 1976 – and his Pediatrician said – “no more” and he never got any more. Then there were a lot less Vaccines than now – and back then it wasn’t mandatory.

  4. …and I suppose none of these child patients have been given the chance to receive INTRAVENOUS C like was shown to cure the original polio virus and has a track record of being a universal anti-virus…. one doctor, Fredrick R Klenner of NC cured 40 of 40 cases even after the paralysis had set in… just like those lucky enough to get Marik’s protocol [ an ivc cocktail with hydrocortisone and B1] that has reduced hospital sepsis death rates from 50% to 3% everywhere it’s been adopted… yet it is stonewalled by the vast majority.. surely there must be malpractice guilt in those ‘experts’ souls…….

  5. My son had these symptoms last year after having the flu virus. He was not able to walk properly. His legs flapped as he walked and he had pain in his calves. He was admitted to the hospital and after an MRI showed normal brain activity, and bloodwork came back, he was diagnosed with myositis. I was told after the body fights off a tough virus, like the flu, the immune system can continue to fight and turn on the body’s muscle tissue. His body was breaking down muscle tissue. They treated him with fluids to flush out the virus. He was back to complete wellness about 10 days after released from the hospital. His physician did speak of the condition as being polio-Like.

  6. My son is currently in the hospital for AFM in northern VA. No vax. We’ll actually be transferring to an inpatient rehab facility soon, so he can learn to sit, stand and walk again. Thankfully, his respiratory system and other bodily functions were unaffected. So crazy the timing of all these articles as we’re going through it!

    1. Hi J.W., I found it interesting to hear that your son was not vaccinated but nevertheless contracted AFM. I am currently pregnant and really debating on whether to vaccinate or not. Have you been told a reason as to what could’ve caused this? Is your son ok now? How’s recovery going? I wish you both all the best.

  7. Interesting and illuminating comment from a retired pediatrician in upstate New York, responding a couple of years ago to an article in the British Medical Journal about AFM. Here’s what he says:

“It is taboo to suggest [that vaccines might play a role], but some old-timers remember “provocation poliomyelitis” or “provocation paralysis”. This is paralytic polio following intramuscular injections, typically with vaccines. PP was most convincingly documented by Austin Bradford Hill and J. Knowelden during the 1949 British polio epidemic when the risk of paralytic polio was increased 20-fold among children who had received the DPT injection (BMJ 2:1 – Jul 1 1950). Similar observations were made by Greenberg and colleagues in New York City; their literature review cited suspected cases as far back as 1921. ..I first became aware of PP 10 years ago while browsing through Krugman’s “Infectious Disease of Children” (p 128 of the 2004 edition). AFM may result from a direct virus attack on the spinal cord, or by an immune attack triggered by a virus, or by something else. If a polio-like virus is circulating in the US, the possibility of its provocation by one or more vaccines has to be considered.”

  8. Yeap. Not surprise. When we vaccinate one virus, another more dangerous virus will take its place. Yes. They received the polio vaccine according to text. I keep saying we cant vaccinate the entire earth without dire consequences!

  9. I suspect these new cases with AFM would most likely involve children given the injected polio vaccine and thus would not be due to polio virus itself….unlike NPAFP (non polio acute flaccid paralysis) which has recently been reported to affect many thousands of children in India after multiple doses of oral polio. Whether AFM and NPAFP are the same conditions, I would certainly like to know. Has the EV-D68 enterovirus been found in NPAFP cases?

In the recent AFM cases, it seems that it is unlikely that the polio enterovirus that is vaccinated against, is the actual cause, especially given that another virus (EV-D68) has been found in at least some of these kids and the stated content of the vaccine. It appears more likely that the eradication of the polio enterovirus is giving way to other, possibly more potent enteroviruses, to infect the gut, whether by means of cellular or acellular mode of polio vaccination. In this way, it is believed that the coxsackie enterovirus infects the gut and then leads to Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (which some refer to as CFS). I assume that this form of ME/CFS would be possible with both types of polio vaccination. If this is trueThis would open the door for many new cases of CFS even today.

  10. Time to look anew, and urgently, at the problem of provocation poliomyelitis. See this article in New England Journal of Medicine. Abstract here, and copied below: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7830731

    BACKGROUND:
In Romania the rate of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis is for unexplained reasons 5 to 17 times higher than in other countries. Long ago it was noted that intramuscular injections administered during the incubation period of wild-type poliovirus infection increased the risk of paralytic disease (a phenomenon known as “provocation” poliomyelitis). We conducted a case-control study to explore the association between intramuscular injections and vaccine-associated poliomyelitis in Romania.

    METHODS:
The patients were 31 young children in whom vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis developed from 1988 through 1992. Eighteen were vaccine recipients, and 13 had acquired the disease by contact with vaccine recipients. Each of these children was matched with up to five controls according to health center, age, and in the case of vaccine recipients, history of receipt of the live attenuated oral poliovirus vaccine. Data were abstracted from medical records that documented the injections administered in the 30 days before the onset of paralysis.

    RESULTS:
Of the 31 children with vaccine-associated disease, 27 (87 percent) had received one or more intramuscular injections within 30 days before the onset of paralysis, as compared with 77 of the 151 controls (51 percent) (matched odds ratio, 31.2; 95 percent confidence interval, 4.0 to 244.2). Nearly all the intramuscular injections were of antibiotics, and the association was strongest for the patients who received 10 or more injections (matched odds ratio for > or = 10 injections as compared with no injections, 182.1; 95 percent confidence interval, 15.2 to 2186.4). The risk of paralytic disease was strongly associated with injections given after the oral polio virus vaccine, but not with injections given before or at the same time as the vaccine (matched odds ratio, 56.7; 95 percent confidence interval, 8.9 to infinity). The attributable risk in the population for intramuscular injections given in the 30 days before the onset of paralysis was 86 percent (95 percent confidence interval, 66 to 95 percent); that is, we estimate that 86 percent of the cases of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis in this population might have been prevented by the elimination of intramuscular injections within 30 days after exposure to oral poliovirus vaccine.

    CONCLUSIONS:
Provocation paralysis, previously described only for wild-type poliovirus infection, may rarely occur in a child who receives multiple intramuscular injections shortly after exposure to oral poliovirus vaccine, either as a vaccine recipient or through contact with a recent recipient. This phenomenon may explain the high rate of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis in Romania, where the use of intramuscular injections of antibiotics in infants with febrile illness is common.

  11. Do we know if the current cases in PA are vaccinated against polio?

I remember reading that there were recent cases of polio in unvaccinated children because of shedding by recently-vaccinated children, but it didn’t sound as severe as this!

  12. This condition has developed in countries where Bill Gates was pushing the polio vaccine……I can’t be the only person who read those articles.

  13. And don’t forget many illegals from several different countries caused many to die the last time from enterovirus in large number. I am a firm believer in only two vaccinations: pneumonia and in my job tetanus. The others are way too many for babies, toddlers and even up to the age of 10 and total somewhere around 70 vaccinations and perhaps also caused autism. Chemicals in any one’s body are toxic. I am allergic to antibiotics and will never get another again after 5 weeks of misery. I take no drugs of any kind, everything in my home is cleaned by Shaklee products to avoid chemicals, and no synthetic anything allowed in our home either. In my early 30’s I was seriously ill and fed up with life, but found Shaklee products and to date am very healthy and enjoy good food and an alcoholic drink now and then as well. I exercise outside as that is the right way to exercise in the light, and more because I want to be able to ward off stuff that many can pass along.

  14. No doubt that this new disease will be linked to the over vaccination of the children. They are using the children and old folks as experiments. The vaccines are breaking down the system which naturally wreaks havoc in the gastrointestinal organs. Amazing what people will do for money and power.

  15. Is this not what happened after Bill Gates and the world health organization brought the polio vaccine to India, only on A much larger scale. In the same instance, from the same vaccine were not 47,000 women sterilized????

There are no safe vaccines, none. Further more I would not believe A word coming from the CDC, or the FDA. Stop poisoning your children!

  16. It is interesting that the CDC gets more alarmed about measles and whooping cough than polio. This is what I read on CDC.gov:

“•From August 2014 through August 2018, CDC has received information on a total of 362 cases of AFM across the US; most of the cases continue to occur in children.
•Even with an increase in cases since 2014, AFM remains a very rare condition. Less than one in a million people in the United States get AFM each year.”

That second bullet just doesn’t seem to have that, “help, help, the sky is falling” alarm that was present when a few people got measles, which was an over reaction or just a conspiracy to force non vaccinators to get on the vaccination band wagon.

  17. It’s a strange article. No information given on how many of those diagnosed with this illness have been vaccinated with polio vaccine.

  18. Was this a live strain? Injection in leg or arm? How long after the children received the vaccine did it take before their reactions occurred? Right away? Or within the first 28 days of receiving the Polio shot?

    1. Perhaps most significant statement in the article, given what we already know about the spread of disease and how it can most effectively be controlled: “But vaccination campaigns in the DRC, with its remote villages, crumbling infrastructure, and weak health system, are tough. They failed to reach enough children.” The $1billion/year eradication program seems to have priority over other more reasonable and perhaps effective means of controlling disease spread. Imagine that.

  19. I had similar symptoms for years. One doctor flat out dismissed the possibility that it was polio just because I had the vaccine.

I finally got over it with alternative medicine. In my case the cause was severe constipation.

Has anyone asked those with this new dis-ease how there bowel is and thought to treat that?

  20. more than likely this is a reaction to vaccines. everybody is an individual and therefore has individual reactions to a vaccine. Pesticides also trigger strange reactions as do other chemicals. Anytime a baby/toddler/child (or even adult) has a strange “illness” I always look to a vaccine reaction first. I would always ask first when was your last vaccination? And secondly, where you exposed to any pesticide recently?

  21. SPREAD the WORD!!!
In 1948, Dr. Frederick Klenner documented CURING 69 cases of polio using IV Vitamin C.

In 1949, he presented his paper at the annual meeting of the AMA in Atlantic City, NJ, as to the above.

Dr. Levy has written a paper as to how it may be illegal to deny a patient IV Vitamin C.
Docs familiar with IV C: http://www.icimed.com and http://www.acam.com

  22. Definately possible— tank a vaccine with active polio- and youll see it “ re-occuring” after it had been “ abolished”.. but its a different strain— so pharm can create a “ modern polio” vaccine— use scare tactics & watch the revenue roll in…

  23. Interestingly, there has been an increase in the number of “polio-like” viruses since polio vaccines were introduced. There’s another article on this website which discusses the problem of vaccines encouraging similar viruses to proliferate. Because they compete for the same targets as the polio virus but do not have the susceptibility to the body’s very specific immune system segments, these “new” microbes get around the vaccines quite easily. This “new” virus is the same type of virus as the polio virus. Hmmmm.

Vaccine pushers have done a very serious disservice to poor areas of Africa where polio is endemic. In the past, those areas had rates of polio infection which were quite high but there was some level of natural immunity because of the centuries of the local people being exposed. It was normal for young children to acquire a mild form of the infection and which conferred a lifetime of immunity. There were few deaths or serious ramifications. Then the vaccine pushers got the bright idea to start polio vaccination programs and the rate of infection, of course went down. Everyone was happy until the lack of booster inoculations produced a number of teens who had very much more serious infections which killed them or left them permanently disabled. In those areas of Africa, disability is deadly as there are no government programs for the disabled.

    1. Viruses do not compete for “targets” whatever that means. Viruses of all types are produced by our own bodies OR we become infected by a virus of another species that was produced by its body/cells. There is much dissembling and obfuscation by the CDC and the official health/science agencies about diseases and endless drivel on how viruses mutate, hide, cause multiple different symptoms in multiples of different people. It’s all post polio era pharma-science. Kochs Postulates are the gold standard still. Then there is the conflation of DNA and RNA virus by these same official institutions as if they are the same. They are not. Read Peter Duesbergs “Inventing the AIDS Virus”.
Do you have any references for what you claim in your post? You make many claims with no resources given.

  24. Agreed Fran,,,,I would wager most if not all were “polio” vaccinated,,,,I would also wager that these symptoms were caused as you say,,,by the vaccinations they had. So many parents are sooooo darn naïve about vaccinations.

  25. I suggest anyone interested in how polio got its start, (careerism, fame, money, prestige) as a paralyzing virus when it’s first known affects were rare and only mild cold like symptoms, read “Trial by Fury” by Aaron E. Klein. Principled science was thrown out the window in order to raise public fear and hysteria re: a virus that was not epidemic, and never isolated and tested per Kochs Postulates. This article tells us nothing as far as investigative results by using the science of epidemiology i.e. where were these kids, same area? Same town? Same school? Were they all just administered a vaccine when NPAFP presented as cold/flu? Were they immune compromised children? Had they been exposed to a poison and toxin, etc. etc.. . So a vacuum of speculation ensues and thus opportunity for official science aka CDC prevaricators, to throw out theories and guesses as to the cause. Besides, like HIV and HEP A,B,C etc. enteroviruses are RNA. They aren’t cytotoxic to the cell, thus they do nothing harmful. Many other scientists who had different explanations of polio myelitis at the time of Salk and Sabin were ignored.

  26. There is a very corrupt link between the FDA, CDC and the big pharmaceutical houses. The chief executives go back and forth between government service and then back again to big pharma. It is actually quite scandalous and if we had anything resembling legitimate journalism, would have long since been exposed far and wide. There is the case recently reported here of the CDC manipulating data in order to increase sales of chicken pox vaccine: https://thevaccinereaction.org/2018/08/cdc-accused-of-manipulating-shingles-data/

Hillary Clinton’s friend Dr. Margaret Hamburg was hired at the FDA during the first Obama term, at Clinton’s suggestion. Hamburg has been indicted: http://ahrp.org/former-fda-commissioner-charged-in-federal-racketeering-lawsuit/

The list of egregious actions by those who come from the pharmaceutical industry to government service is long. After their stint in government, they often go back to very lucrative positions in big pharma. Too bad for her that Hamburg got caught.

  27. I’m with “Incinerator.”

Perhaps we need to take a deeper look at gut health. The stuff that passes for food these days (not too mention the pesticides sprayed on fruits and vegetables) is decimating our microbiome, which we need to protect us from disease.

  28. There is no word that these kids were not vaccinated, which give itself away as I can conclude that they were in fact vaccinated.Imagine the triumphant declaration if it was the other way.You never would see the end of it,be sure of that.

  29. Confusing article. I read it twice trying to understand if these cases are vaccine related. 25 years ago when I did 4 months of research to decide if I was going to stop vaccinating my 1st child and the one growing inside me (which I did stop completely which I believe saved my 3rd child from a life full of disabilities or death due to an undetected genetic liver condition), the only reported cases of polio in the US were contracted by parents/g-parents & caregivers of recently vaccinated children. Please write articles that are clear so we can share with parents that don’t have any experience with the risks and the truth about vaccines.

  30. How many of those patients were recently vaccinated we’re had been coughed up on her puked upon by shedders, as some vaccines do shed! All I know is I never had an ammonia as a child one of seven children I got an ammonia vaccine in 2007 and I’ve had pneumonia 12 times since five of those pneumonia Belts I had to be put into the hospital for five days each time and given massive amounts of antibiotics!

  31. The 2 studies below one in 2015 and the other in 2018 both conclude that (Polio like paralysis) called NPAFP in 3rd world countries like India (and Africa & other countries) is caused by the oral polio vaccine given in those countries. They even found out via the second study that when they RESTRICTED giving the oral polio vaccine in following years after the first study that the incidence of NPAFP went down.

BTW——–(In the US –It’s interesting that my own MD developed NPAFP after he received his own polio vaccine many years ago. When he recovered he became a holistic MD.)

——–In India for example, “A total of 640,000 children developed NPAFP (Non-Polio Acute Flaccid Paralysis)

in the years 2000–2017, suggesting that there were an additional 491,000 paralyzed children above expected numbers for children with NPAFP according to the new study.” ——-The authors state:

“…our findings suggest that the increase in NPAFP (and the later decrease in such cases) was indeed an adverse effect of the pulse polio immunization programme.”

    February 2015, VOLUME 135 / ISSUE Supplement 1

    Abstract

Trends in Non-Polio Acute Flaccid Paralysis Incidence in India 2000 to 2013

CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of NPAFP (Non-Polio Acute Flaccid Paralysis ) was strongly associated with the number of OPV( Oral Polio Vaccine) doses delivered to the area. A dose–response relationship with cumulative doses over the years was also observed, which strengthens the hypothetical relationship between polio vaccine and NPAFP. The fall in the NPAFP rate in Bihar and UP for the first time in 2012, with a decrease in the number of OPV doses delivered, is evidence of a CAUSATIVE association between OPV doses and the NPAFP rate.

  32. The form of vitamin c for any virus, even polio is Sodium Ascorbate. Not ascorbic acid…Check out Dr Suzanne Humphrie, Dr Jerry Tennant and Dr Frederick Klennar for dosages. You can take it orally, rectally or I/V. According to the late Dr Klennar if it fails its because you didn’t take enough.

All vaccines have a neurotoxin, either mercury, aluminum or formaldehyde. List those elements as allergies and your doctor can’t give you a toxic vaccine. An alternative is homeoprophylaxis using homeopathy or just say NO. Do your own research, knowledge is still power and join Weston A Price foundation. They have the healthiest herd!

  33. I have heard that this outbreak is due to the illegals that have crossed the border in the past. We now have 14,000 un-vaccinated illegals trying to force their way in. How will we EVER protect our children against these diseases?

  34. If Scientists were able to cure Polio with a vaccine as well as Economists cured Great Depressions with liquidity we’re in serious trouble.

  35. I was a polio pioneer and didn’t realize the impact and importance of my perticipation. My parents were afraid as were others during that time. I was a student at Pt. Harmony Elementary in Kanawha county in West Virginia. It was so exciting for us when we would get on a school bus and ride to Nitro High School. We were line up with kids from several schools and our upper arm was rubbed with what I later learned was Iodine then given the vaccination. We were given a series of I think three inocolations with the last one given after school was out for the summer. They had a picnic for all the students and our parents were with us. I remember my mother being with me that day. I recieved a card and a button pin. I kept it for years. I got wet some how about 5 years ago and I reluctantly let it go. It was always valuable to me.
