The dystopian response by governments to the COVID-19 pandemic taught us a hard lesson. Never before had human populations around the world simultaneously watched medical doctors and government officials use fear and propaganda to suddenly catapult societies into a social, economic and ethical meltdown. We were ordered to hide in our homes, cover our faces with cloth, and stay six feet away from each other. Failure to comply with social isolation orders was punished with “quarantine shaming” and jail time in some states. Schools and churches and theaters were closed, along with beaches and parks and gyms, and even doctors’ offices.
