Aseem Malhotra, MD on the Epidemic of Misinformed Doctors and Patients

green leaves

We have an epidemic of misinformed doctors and misinformed and unwittingly harmed patients based upon a number of factors:

Biased funding of research that derives clinical decision-making in the consultation room, which is research that’s funded because it’s likely to be profitable, not beneficial for patients in public health; biased reporting in medical journals; biased reporting in media; commercial conflicts of interest; defensive medicine and, last but not least, an inability of doctors to understand and communicate health statistics.

When you combine that together, you have this pandemic of misinformation when it comes to health and medicine. And I’m not just saying this is an abstract concept. If you look at what’s been going on in the world in the last two decades… huge increase in burden of chronic disease, worsening mental health crisis.

— Aseem Malhotra, MD, cardiologist
