Presidential Executive Order on Childhood Vaccines and Autism Issued

Presidential Executive Order on Childhood Vaccines and Autism Issued

On Aug. 10, 2026, the Trump administration issued an executive order revising the childhood vaccine recommendations in the United States. The order calls for recommending that all children be vaccinated against eleven diseases (down from the current 17), including measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, Haemophilus influenzae type B, pneumococcal disease, human papillomavirus, and varicella.1 2 3 4 5

The order also calls for splitting up the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine into three separate shots rather than the current three-in-one shot and spacing out the administration of childhood vaccinations as much as possible. Additionally, it directs the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HSS) to present plans within 90 days for additional research into childhood vaccines, specifically to conduct safety and efficacy involving vaccine ingredients, evaluate risk/benefit profiles of the vaccines, and look at ways to improve vaccine safety monitoring and transparency.1 2 3 4 5

According to White House spokesperson Kush Desai:

President Trump has been clear: America must have the best childhood vaccine schedule in the world. The Administration remains steadfastly committed to delivering on this presidential priority with Gold Standard Science for the countless parents whose questions and concerns about vaccinations have been ignored or mocked.6

Maximizing Parental Choice on Vaccines

President Trump characterized his executive order as a “major victory for parents’ rights, religious and constitutional rights, and for the gold standard science.”4 In fact, the order contains an entire section titled “Maximizing Parental Choice over Childhood Vaccines.” It reads:

The Attorney General shall take appropriate measures to further meritorious legal actions challenging State laws that conflict with States’ constitutional and Federal statutory obligations related to parental authority, religious freedom, disability accommodations, and equal protection under the law, including, to the extent applicable under Federal law, States’ obligations to provide religious and medical exemptions from childhood and adolescent immunization requirements.
The Departments of Justice, Education, and HHS shall take appropriate action to ensure that their contractors and grantees, including States and localities, are compliant with their constitutional and Federal statutory obligations related to parental authority, religious freedom, disability accommodations, and equal protection under the law, including, to the extent applicable under Federal law, their obligations to provide religious and medical exemptions from childhood and adolescent immunization requirements.5

More Research on Vaccines and Autism

Reuters reported a source as saying the executive order was driven by President Trump’s interest in advancing research on autism to better understand the causes of the disease.7 In signing the order, Trump himself said that it had to do “with many subjects, but including autism in particular.” He added:

Decades ago, children received only a small fraction of the vaccines required today. In those times, people were much healthier and of course, the high rates of autism now observed did not exist. So, there’s a reason for such epidemic rates of autism. And we’re going to bring it back to much closer to where it was. While we do not know exactly what the cause is with respect to autism, it is essential to our research efforts that we have the very best vaccine recommendations in the entire world.2

CNN had previously reported that during the past few months, Trump has “pressed senior officials, including U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to prioritize greater scrutiny of vaccines,” saying that “behind the scenes, Trump has continued to press Kennedy and others for more action on vaccines, focusing in particular on efforts to investigate the causes of autism.”.8

The order is a follow-up to an executive order issued by Trump earlier this year titled “Realigning United States Core Childhood Vaccine Recommendations With Best Practices from Peer, Developed Countries.” That order, signed on May 29, 2026, endorsed a scientific assessment done in January by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) calling for a reduction in the number of recommended vaccines for children and adolescents in closer alignment with other peer nations and for federal health agencies to align their policies with the findings of the study.9

“This updated recommendation finally aligns the United States with other advanced and developed nations around the world. More importantly, it aligns us with common sense and knowledge,” Trump said.1
