The mother of a 12-year-old girl said an Ohio children’s hospital denied her daughter a spot on an organ transplant list due to her vaccination status, specifically the COVID-19 and flu shots. The mother, Jeneen Deal, who is related to Vice President J.D. Vance’s half-siblings through marriage, adopted Adeline from China when she was just four years old and knew her daughter would eventually need a heart transplant. Adeline has two rare but serious heart conditions: Ebstein’s anomaly and Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, and has been receiving treatment from the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for more than 10 years.1
In January 2025, Mrs. Deal says her daughter’s doctor confirmed she was in heart failure but, due to her vaccination status, the doctor refused to put Adeline on the waiting list for a heart transplant.1
Heart transplant recipients are at heightened risk for infections and the hospital mandates flu and COVID-19 shots for all patients on the transplant waiting list. This policy remains in place despite the fact that both COVID and flu shots do not guarantee immunity and there are cases of symptomatic and asymptomatic SARS-Co-V-2 and influenza infections that occur even though a person has received the shots.2 3
The Deal family declined vaccinations for Adeline, citing their religious beliefs. Deal and her husband, Brayton, are members of a non-denominational Christian church and say they made the decision after being spiritually led.1
Religious Rights and Vaccination: Where Faith and Medicine Collide
Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, individuals are protected from religious discrimination, including in cases where they object to vaccinations based on their faith. Some religious individuals oppose vaccines due to ethical concerns about how they were developed. Some pharmaceutical companies that produced the COVID shots used the fetal cell line HEK-293—originally derived from an aborted fetus—for research, development, or testing.4
For some people, receiving a vaccine connected to fetal cell research conflicts with their religious convictions regarding abortion. Others may view vaccination as a violation of their personal beliefs about bodily autonomy and faith.
Children’s Hospital Stands Firm on Transplant Policy After Denying Patient
“I called the child’s advocate at Cincinnati Children’s to see if they could help us with a religious exemption and so forth,” Mrs. Deal said in an interview. “He came back and said they are not going to change their policy, and this is what it is, and we are more than welcome to find another hospital if we didn’t like it.”5
A spokesperson from the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital said in a statement:
At Cincinnati Children’s, clinical decisions are guided by science, research, and best practices. We tailor care plans to each patient in collaboration with their family to ensure the safest, most effective treatment.5
“It’s not right, and we don’t believe in doing the vaccination part of it,” Mrs. Deal said. A Pittsburgh hospital has since contacted the Deal family who is considering transferring their daughter’s care there. 5
Hospital Doubles Down on Policy Amid Public Outcry
On Feb. 12, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital issued a second statement, which Mrs. Deal said is in response to increasing backlash faced by the hospital for their refusal to add Adeline to the waiting list for life-saving care. “Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is feeling the pressure from everyone’s calls and the media attention but the transplant team still won’t go in writing on whether they will continue to refuse to add Adaline to the transplant list,” Mrs. Deal shared in an update to a media outlet.1
The hospital’s rebound statement said, in part:
We approach every transplant evaluation with a focus on long-term success, guided by medical science and an unwavering commitment to patient safety. Organ transplantation is one of the most complex procedures in medicine, requiring careful evaluation of each individual patient by a multi-disciplinary team. Our transplant team—including expert physicians, psychologists, ethicists, and social workers—conducts a thorough evaluation to determine a child’s eligibility for transplant and placement on the waiting list. Organ donation is a profound and selfless gift from another patient and family, and the number of available organs is limited.
Our responsibility is to ensure that every donated organ is used in a way that maximizes successful outcomes for children in need. Because children who receive a transplant will be immunosuppressed for the rest of their life, vaccines play a critical role in preventing or reducing the risk of life-threatening infections, especially in the first year. These decisions involve discussion between our providers and the patient’s family. At Cincinnati Children’s, we are committed to providing world-class, individualized care that gives every child the greatest opportunity to live their best possible life.”1
The American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) supports the hospital’s vaccination policy for patients awaiting organ transplants. “Transplant candidates and recipients frequently interact with other at-risk individuals in the hospital. The ASTS recommend[s] routine vaccination for all organ recipients and for those on the waitlist,” it said in a position statement on its website.1
Hospitals Mandate Vaccines But Overlook Other Proven Health Factors for Organ Transplant Candidates
Despite many hospitals’ strict vaccination requirements for transplant candidates, there appears to be little emphasis on other health-promoting behaviors that could improve a patient’s long-term success post-transplant. Unlike vaccines or biological products labeled “vaccines” like the COVID shot, transplant programs do not mandate recipients to follow a nutritious diet, maintain a healthy weight, or engage in regular exercise—factors that are widely recognized as essential for overall health and longevity.
Additionally, while some transplant programs do have restrictions on active smokers and drug users, enforcement can be inconsistent. There are no universal requirements for patients to maintain long-term abstinence from substances that could compromise their newly transplanted organ.
Ironically, hospital cafeterias often serve highly processed foods laden with sugar and artificial additives, despite the critical need for transplant patients to maintain optimal health. While medical teams stress the importance of “maximizing the success” of each donated organ in response to denying a child a spot on the waiting list, there is no formal requirement for recipients to adopt other lifestyle changes that could contribute to a stronger immune system and better long-term outcomes. This apparent inconsistency raises questions about the selectivity of hospital policies and whether vaccine requirements truly reflect a health-centered, personalized approach to patient well-being or simply are enforcing a one-size-fits-all policy that violates the right to autonomy and informed consent.
No Shot, No Transplant: But Where is the Long-Term Data?
Discrimination against transplant patients based on vaccination status is not a new issue. In recent years, several cases have emerged where patients were denied organ transplants due to their vaccination status. In October 2021, a Colorado woman with stage 5 chronic kidney disease was removed from the transplant list at UCHealth in Aurora because neither she nor her donor had received a COVID shot. Similarly, in January 2022, Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston denied a heart transplant to a patient who refused COVID vaccination.6

A great way to handle this is take your power back as a group, aware of the negative effects of vaccines, & the incredibly low efficacy of these 2 vaccines, is to offer your organs to “only non-vaccinated (choose your list of vaccines, but Covid is a great start) individuals”. I work in Dialysis and have several health conscious individuals who refuse to take these vaccines and have been kept from the transplant list, yet the rest who are on the transplant lists are the least cooperative with their daily kidney care. As a nurse it astounds me at the control of these transplant committees, but realize, these surgeons don’t have work without the sacrifice of family’s giving the organs of a loved one.
This is pure madness. The shots are known to CAUSE myocarditis and yet, they require it for a heart transplant. The shots have been shown to be completely ineffective so why are they clinging to a failed policy? I suspect they don’t want to face lawsuits from the people they’ve harmed in the past from their vaccines. It would be admitting that the shots are no good (and harmful).

As you said, this is a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
It also is incongruent to force unproven, unscientific, low efficacy COVID-19 vaccines upon a patient.
Interesting point about allowing the patient to continue to eat poorly, drink alcohol, use tobacco, increase free radicals and immune suppressing chemicals in their daily life while being granted a transplant 🤔
Also, I’m wondering how many immunologists are scratching their head saying: You suppress the immune system post transplant, but then you think artificial immunity (vaccines) will strengthen the immune pathways of the body 🤔

Show us the vote of the board members individually. Then we’d like to see their health profiles to see if they are personally equipped to even make these decisions in the first place. If they’re overweight obese people whom pay no attention to the myriad of alternative more effective treatments and lifestyle approaches themselves, pay no mind to bio engineered ingredients, chemicals…
The medical bureaucracy now takes over fifty years to incorporate updated valid new science and approaches for most practical considerations. That’s more than a lifetime for many people. They’re not creating cures, they’re creating customers. When will we see stem cell therapy as part of our standard insurance benefit? All the important people are getting this, but us plebs; access denied. Heard of some special mushroom treatments which can answer the question of immunosuppression? Of course you have not. Wear your mask. Take your vaccines. The Covid shots and flu shots don’t work so it’s an insane policy, not remotely backed by any science except pseudoscience. Kennedy just asked the CDC to stop their flu shot campaign due to its efficacy. It is well known the COVID jabs can cause heart issues so to ask a heart transplant patient to take that jab is premeditated murder. I hope they find a hospital with common sense. This has insurance reimbursement rules written all over it.

My cousin, in his late 30’s, had liver failure. He needed a transplant, however before they would put him on the list they required him to take the covid jab. He was in pretty bad shape, couldn’t really speak however he made it clear that he didn’t want to take it. The doctors denied him in the same fashion as the article here and he relented. After he got the shot his condition deteriorated quickly to the point he was deemed too sick to be viable for the transplant and died a couple days later.
Vaccines do not make you healthy, they make you sick. Why would you require someone who is already ill to take something that will make them sicker? It is lunacy.
