Medical Journals are Funded by the Pharmaceutical Industry

medical journals

The medical community has long used scientific research to guide individual care, industry protocols, and what is known within the medical community as best practice or standard of care. With differing opinions about best treatment options, the final say often comes down to what clinical research shows—with documentation in peer-reviewed medical journals being the gold standard. However, the entangled relationship between pharmaceutical companies and medical journals is growing and it is skewing results in favor of pharmaceutical product use.

86 Percent of Clinical Trials Funded by Big Pharma

John Abramson, MD has stated that medical students and doctors are being taught the importance of using results of clinical trials to practice evidence-based medicine, but they are not being that 86 percent of those clinical trials are being funded by Big Pharma. After the trials are completed, peer reviewers for journals only see summarized data without ever seeing the actual data from clinical trials themselves.1

Harvard ethics professor Marcia Angell, MD describes how pharmaceutical companies have a direct hand in the design, analysis, and publication of clinical trials and that academic physicians are nothing more than “hired hands” who carry out the trials as directed then sign their names to ghost-authored reports.2

In addition to pharmaceutical companies funding peer reviewed journal articles, according to the British Medical Journal (BMJ), 50.9 percent of medical journal editors are paid large sums by pharmaceutical companies. In 2014, the BMJ published findings that the average mean general payment to journal editors from pharmaceutical companies was $27,941.3

Journal Articles are Now ‘Marketing Machines’

In 2004, Richard Horton, FRCP FMedSci, editor of The Lancet medical journal, wrote, “Journal articles have devolved into information laundering operations for the pharmaceutical industry”4 and former editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Dr. Angell accused the pharmaceutical industry of becoming “primarily a marketing machine.”4

Dr. Angell stated:

The medical profession is being bought by the pharmaceutical industry, not only in terms of the practice of medicine, but also in terms of teaching and research. The academic institutions of this country are allowing themselves to be the paid agents of the pharmaceutical industry. I think it’s disgraceful.5

Dr. Abramson has stated that skewed studies paid for and performed by the pharmaceutical companies harm the public tremendously.

Largest Drug Recall in History Due to Lack of Data Integrity

“This is why we’re having the problems of recalls and drugs that don’t turn out to be as good as they say,” Dr. Abramson stated.1

Dr. Abramson, who authored the book Overdosed America: The Broken Promise of American Medicine, played a large role in the investigation of the painkiller Vioxx, which led to the largest drug recall in history after only five years on the market. A Vioxx safety panel found that the risk of serious health problems and death among Vioxx patients was twice as high as in a group who took naproxen.6

Research published in the medical journal The Lancet estimated that 88,000 Americans had heart attacks after taking Vioxx and 38,000 of those resulted in death.

During trials against Vioxx manufacturing company Merck, it was revealed that researchers for Merck were aware of heart attacks before the study was published but the information was left out of the manuscript. The NEJM issued an “Expression of Concern” calling” into question the integrity of Merck’s data” due to “inaccuracies and deletions.”6

“Despite grumbles of ‘big pharma’, most of us still put our faith in the peer-review process, confident that the scientific method will guide us in the right direction regardless of people’s own bias,” wrote Fiona MacDonald, CEO of Science Alert. She said:

Unfortunately, the results provided to us by the scientific method are only as good as the editors that gatekeep them.5

  2. That’s a shocker. That certifies that most medical research and writing is pretty much a non-starter. Truth, facts and accuracy are well beyond the scope and purpose of big pharma.

    1. First go to the Bible and study that revealed system of absolute truth that has evidence for it’s existence. This connects the human mind with God’s mind and cannot help to expand our minds. Then, when studying any topic such as germ/terrain theory, apply the same principles to discern what the truth is.

John 16:13 However, when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, **he will guide you into all truth:** for he shall not speak of himself; but whatever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

  3. The covid pandemic taught me that I must seek research from
other countries outside the US to get unbiased more truthful
information. The omissions and bias were glaringly obvious to me.

  4. Avoid all drugs, eat healthy – grown yourself if you can, exercise regularly and avoid the sanctioned drug dealers (MD, DO), seek out great chiropractic care and whole food supplements where you are lacking nutrients – standard process is a great company with reliable products, get your fish oils from Nordic Naturals, and find a good naturopathic doctor to help you along the way if necessary.

    1. Healthy people don’t profit Big Pharma. Drugs and vaccines carry a lot of risks while food supplements nourish our bodily functions. So for that reason I share your sentiment wholeheartedly. The medical community has failed to uphold Hippocrates Oath. Drugs have a place but forcing medical interventions are unacceptable.

  5. Found this out when my mother was dieing of cancer there is a series called The Truth About Cancer. They go into how big pharma pays researchers to write what they call ghost articles and then pay a high profile MD for his blessing and signiture. So if you are a med student and you read an article that you think is written by this world famous doctor what do you think is going to happen. That article will then direct the way that future doctor is going to practice. It’s a form of brainwashing.. Its been going since the beginning of modern medicine! It horrible once you know this because you have to question and research everything your doctor says to you and it shouldn’t be that way! It’s pathetic how everything is always money driven and if its not big oil tugging our chain it’s big pharma who’s manning the strings!

  6. Great question!
There has never been a “truth source”. To find my path, I study all opinions and settle on those that make the most sense to me. I spend hours every month on pubmed, read the conclusions on studies and compare with several well qualified scientists. Doctors are well intentioned but must practice within the “Standard of Care”, which often is antiquated and deadly in my opinion. (like the theory that cholesterol causes heart disease, when is is really arterial calcium and inflammation) Medical school curriculum is heavily influenced by industry and physicians spend 24 hours out of 8 years of their education on nutrition. Our medical system does not address cause, cure or prevention. What is left is dangerous meds and surgery. Organic food, eating mostly veggies, low grains and no added sweetners, grass fed meet, free rang chicken and fish works for me.

  7. We make decisions based on the data available.!
    I avoid pharmaceutical.
The bad effect last longer than the intention effect.

In all my life the only pharmaceutical that helped me was for poison ivy.

  8. They are going to be held accountable for their crimes against humanity.
They lied and covered up the truth.
    Following their paid narrative.
Targeted, dismissed, removed and ridiculed anyone or anything that contradict their paid for narrative.
And was allowed to call this Science.

  9. Good to know that the medical journals are full of fraud and lies too. I never looked at one. Now I know to totally ignore them.

  10. There is so much that I can say on here that complements what some folks have already said, but this is what I will say: I chose six random studies that the CDC itself published on one of their COVID safety pages (the website listed about 96 studies) and five of the six articles that I read all had something wrong with them. I’m not talking grammatical errors; I’m talking actual data manipulation/exclusion, lies, and funding. The reason I did not read the one is because I think I accidentally closed the tab and never went back to review it. At the end of the day, The Holy Bible is all we can really look to for true information. Yes, all of us have bias but the best bias to have is a Biblical one.
