How is Coronavirus Getting Into the Brain?

How is Coronavirus Getting Into the Brain?

Recently, studies have been published suggesting a link between the SARS-CoV-2 virus, brain inflammation and neurological dysfunction. One study involving 60 patients who recovered from COVID-19, for example, found that 55 percent of them displayed “structural changes” in the brain that manifested with loss of memory and smell for three months. The study, published in The Lancet on Aug. 3, 2020, found evidence that the SARS-CoV virus had invaded the olfactory epithelium—tissue within the human nasal cavity that play a role in the ability to smell.1 2

The encyclopedia Britannica describes the olfactory epithelium as containing “olfactory receptor cells, which have specialized cilia extensions.” It explains that the “cilia trap odor molecules as they pass across the epithelial surface” and that [i]nformation about the molecules is then transmitted from the receptors to the olfactory bulb in the brain.”3

Studies Link SARS-CoV-2 to Changes in Brain

According to the results of The Lancet study, “significant enlarged volumes [of the SARS-CoV-2 virus] were observed in the bilateral olfactory cortices, hippocampi, insulas, left Heschl’s gyrus, left Rolandic operculum and right cingulate gyrus”—”structures” that make up the “central olfactory system.” However, the study was unable to ascertain how the virus managed to infect the olfactory epithelium.1 The study noted:

Several possible invasion routes of SARS-CoV-2 were raised including hematogenous, lymphatic and neuro retrograde routes, etc., yet the exact route was unknown.1

In another study published in the journal Brain on July 8, 2020, researchers at University College London (UCL) examined 43 cases of COVID-19 in which the patients suffered from a high incidence of “acute disseminated encephalomyelitis”—severe brain inflammation. This resulted in “temporary brain dysfunction, strokes, nerve damage or other serious brain effects.” Nine of the patients were diagnosed with a rare condition known as acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM).4 5

Dr. Michael Zandi, a consulting neurologist at UCL’s National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, said:

We’re seeing things in the way COVID-19 affects the brain that we haven’t seen before with other viruses. What we’ve seen with some of these ADEM patients, and in other patients, is you can have severe neurology, you can be quite sick, but actually have trivial lung disease.6 7

In a report published in The New England Journal of Medicine on Apr. 15, 2020, a team of physicians said they observed 58 hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Strasbourg, France and found that 84 percent of them had neurological symptoms, including “encephalopathy, prominent agitation and confusion, and corticospinal tract signs” and also “acute ischemic strokes.”8 9

Among all these studies, none has pinpointed just how the SARS-CoV-2 virus may have entered the brain. One possible route, though, could be the olfactory nerve in the nose, which is considered to be the first cranial nerve or C1. It is one of 12 cranial nerves in the head. The C1 leads into the olfactory epithelium and itsolfactory receptors are located in the mucosa of the nasal cavity—essentially your nose.3 8

Olfactory Nerve: Nose a ‘Shortcut” for Viruses Entering the Brain

In January 2015, a study titled “The olfactory nerve: a shortcut for influenza and other viral diseases into the central nervous system” was published in the journal Pathology.9 That study found that…

Viral infection of the [central nervous system] can lead to damage from infection of nerve cells per se, from the immune response, or from a combination of both. Clinical consequences range from nervous dysfunction in the absence of histopathological changes to severe meningoencephalitis and neurodegenerative disease.9

The study listed viruses that can use the olfactory nerve as a “shortcut” into the brain. Viruses that enter the body through the nose include influenza A virus, herpesviruses, poliovirus, paramyxoviruses (like RSV, measles, mumps), vesicular stomatitis virus, rabies virus, parainfluenza virus, adenoviruses, Japanese encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, chikungunya virus, La Crosse virus, mouse hepatitis virus and bunyaviruses.9

The 2015 Pathology study obviously made no mention of SARS-CoV-2 since that virus was not known then. But if all those other viruses can enter the brain via the nose and olfactory nerve, then might it not be possible for SARS-CoV-2 as well?

Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, MD referenced the olfactory nerve as a route into the brain in a recent article in Technology News & Trends. Citing a 1989 study in the journal Virology titled “Spread of a neurotropic murine coronavirus into the [central nervous system] via the trigeminal and olfactory nerves,”10 11 Dr. Blaylock wrote:

In most instances it enters the brain by way of the olfactory nerves (smell nerves), which connect directly with the area of the brain dealing with recent memory and memory consolidation. By wearing a mask, the exhaled viruses will not be able to escape and will concentrate in the nasal passages, enter the olfactory nerves and travel into the brain.10

Has no-one thought about the wearing of facial diapers forcing the virus back into the nasal passages? How many with brain inflammation have been covering their faces?

(Comment: Has anyone in the elite medical echelons bothered to look at the number of individuals that are demonstrating this syndrome called acute encephalomyelitis who were subjected to the 6 in. nasal swabbing of the cribriform plate (mesh of thin epithelium [1 mm] in the nasopharynx with interlaced olfactory nerve fibers that often lasts 15 20 seconds of twisting and probing into this area (subjects related these facts to me) with their resultant anosmia (inability to smell) for days and accompanying headaches and nausea. Has anyone looked at the iatrogenic sequela of this potentially damaging test, usually performed by a “tech or minimally trained individual” (practicing medicine without a license)? If not, it should be and these individuals and the corporate “leaders,” may be complicitous to major iatrogenic injuries and patients’ long-term neurological injuries and their associated dysfunction . The nasal swab being inserted back to the brain stem was my first thought when reading this article. So glad you addressed this obvious potential link to Covid in the brain. Why do these so called experts fail to look beyond their noses (ha) for a likely culprit. Is it denial? Stupidity? Self-perpetuation of their job? I hope you don’t mind if I copy your comment.

There have been a range of studies which attribute clinical symptoms to COVID which are not universally seen, at best. These include cytokine storms, organ damage, loss of smell, blood clots, and other circulatory disorders. Two questions to the author or others: first, who is supplying the “go to” list of symptoms which are supposed to be caused by this virus? I ask because the virus has never been isolated, nor proven to fulfill Koch’s postulates (or Rivers’ 1935 updates) for linking a microbe to a disease, and then proven by reinfection of lab animals to define and confirm the symptom set. The Chinese studies which purport to show COVID as the cause of a disease meet none of Koch’s postulates. The literature has yet to offer a peer-reviewed study following standard protocols which isolates and then proves the virus by re-infection.

Second, how is positive diagnosis of COVID made with these cases of potential brain/neurological function? It is quite clear that the PCR tests which are relied upon world-wide do not, and can not, provide a definitive diagosis–and per the CDC and WHO are not to be relied on for diagnosis. For two reasons: only an isolated virus can substantiate that a test is finding proven symptoms; and second, the PCR method is not a viable diagnostic tool. This issue has plagued the field for decades now. Without an isolated virus, or a test which can render a definitive diagnosis, how can links such as those proposed in this article be proven?

Do not see any consideration of Covid-19 testing swabs and /or procedures that could easily introduce pathogens into the olfactory nerves. In other words: avoid the test as it has never been verified and the results are meaningless…

You’re all insane, you realize that most of this has been proved wrong and there is little to no evidence to back it up. This website is full of pseudoscience. Since you want people to take off their masks how would you feel about you or your children getting COVID-19 and having to be hospitalized? Please do your research about what is actually true about this pandemic.

Wouldn’t it be a more sensible idea to look at which patients have had flu shots? The flu vaccines have multiple contaminants, one of which is mercury, another, formaldehyde. Evidence shows that those who have had flu shots are more susceptible to damage from COVID. The symptoms cited here could be from vaccine damage to nerve and brain cells.

Where I live, I understand that wearing a mask outside is required. I do notice quite a few people with masks UNDER their nose. Mostly I keep mine under my nose except when required to have it on like @ Telmex.

Avoid masks as much as you possibly can for most people will probably be useful in the long run.

I’ve posted the link to that article by Dr. Blaylock in my Next-door neighborhood app and got death wishes by the hypnotised masses, including a local physician, who said that’s not how it works and to cover your face. I then got flagged and banned from Next-door app.

According to David Icke: COVID-19 IS A VIRUS OF THE HUMAN MIND – THE INCREMENTAL NORMALISATION OF INSANITY – VIRUS MANIA (psyops)

‘COVID-19 is a global unquestioning belief system – a virus of the mind – that has turned billions of people into nothing more than software programs. It’s the frequency that resonates to fear, anxiety, to hatred, to resentment – all these low vibration emotions – particularly fear because they’re all emotions of fear, really. And if you can be pulled into this frequency band of fear, this mind virus – deeply imbalanced frequency of consciousness – if you like – can attach to you. It hides in your subconscious. It’s a virus of the mind – like a computer virus. An information virus. This force transforms them overnight into aggressively paranoid order following, propaganda parroting totalitarians. They are called the corona totalitarians, or the new normals from now on. They’ve lost the ability for rational thought, for connecting the dots, for questioning anything. They think they’ve worked it out, but in actuality, they’re just repeating the official narrative. However, once you become aware of its influence, its influence is over and people start to become free thinkers again.

Well they have found thousands of test kits already contaminated with the virus straight out of the package. So the tests that insert thru the nose will put the lab created virus into your brain.

It would be interesting to know if those patients who got neurological symptoms had worn masks when out in public, going to the store, etc. before they got sick. I wonder if it would be better to wear face shields as they are not snug to the face and nostrils.

The olfactory nerve is not damaged by a virus but by the swab touching the brain when the test is taken. Don’t let anyone stick anything up your nose. Didn’t your mother tell you that when you were three years old?

The nasal swabs for the PCR test give access to the blood brain barrier; one can access the blood brain barrier through the nasal cavity. Some of the swabs were reputed to have been contaminated with the virusa.

Keep trying to breathe through the face diapers……..see how many become ill due to decreased oxygen, increased CO2 intake and the proliferation of organisms in the face diaper itself. Low zinc gives impaired olfactory function.

There is another way. I know that the herpes virus penetrates the blood brain barrier when it has been weakened by wireless phone usage. After while, the herpes virus smolders just beyond the reach of the immune system. Eventually, there is a probability that it will turn into a cancerous brain tumor. That is why the brain tumors are increasing in frequency and they seem to happen right where the person holds the cell phone to their head. It happened to me in 2001 after I used a wireless phone for hours a day.

Here’s a possible way it’s entering the brain: Those long Q-tips are infected with C-19 virus and then shoved way up the nose to introduce it to the brain. I watched a video of young man getting tested that way. When the tech got the Q-tip up his nose…they not only went way up there but once there they twisted that Q-tip very aggressively. When that Q-tip was removed…there was blood on the end of it. THAT alone should be enough reason to NOT get tested.

On the flipside of this, would it not make sense that if you were not wearing a mask you would then have the chance to contract the virus through your nose From another person who has the virus and also isn’t wearing a mask?

The aforementioned article in The Lancet reads: “The clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients were obtained from the hospital records including age, gender, clinical type (mild/severe/critical type, according to WHO guidelines [21]), hospitalization days, existence of fever, cough, gastrointestinal symptoms, known contact history, alcohol intake history, smoking history and laboratory tests including white blood cell (WBC) count, lymphocyte count and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The laboratory tests were done at admission.”

Brilliant! Not a word about the pre-existing diseases and the (so-called) treatment (pharmaceutical, of course) given to the patients! How could one attribute any neurological changes described by the authors to the COVID-19 effects only and specifically? Excellent!

Oh yes, and one more thing: anosmia is a well-known consequence of magnesium deficiency. Nothing to do with horrible frightening neurotoxicity of the deadly virus (causing over 50% symptomless cases. Truly frightening!!!). Just give the patients magnesium in a proper form and dose and enjoy the effects. I have been doing that myself so many times.

My family had Covid-19 back in March when it was new to the U.S. and my 17 year old son was one of the people who lost his sense of smell for months. He never wore a mask back then (he has worn one maybe twice ever since he doesn’t go out). We found that the virus got into all of the systems in our bodies, way past just the lungs. We were prepared for a lung illness but past the early weeks of coughs and shortness of breath the lasting issues we’ve had were more with our other organs. My youngest had bad stomach pain and diarrhea and one of my other kids didn’t really get sick at all (neither did my husband). My 17 year old had bad headaches for weeks, muscle pain, kidney pain and severe fatigue (he still has this 5 months later). I had numb toes, burst blood vessels in my legs (small ones that leaked blood making dark bruises), very high blood pressure, kidney issues, severe shortness of breath, severe headaches, heart pain and palpitations and lots of tingling in my arms and legs, but I didn’t lose my sense of smell the way my son did. I am still working to get my blood pressure back down. It was low before I got sick, now it is very high. We never wore masks for the first months and only wear them rarely now since we rarely go anywhere. This is a bad illness whether you have a mask or not.

AVB, thank you for this comment, as it pretty much disproves the anti-mask wearers’ theories. I generally think that it is sensible to wear a mask when in close contact with other people. Asians are often seen wearing masks long before this Covid 19 issue arose. Sometimes to avoid spreading viruses and sometimes to not breathe pollutants.
I am very interested in the idea of vitamins C and D and magnesium to maintain better immunity from all disease. Also elderberry and other herbal combinations.

As to where this virus originated and why–it’s not far-fetched to think it might have emerged accidentally, but also that it might have been a “gain of function” virus that was accidentally released from the Wuhan lab. I don’t buy into all the conspiracy theories about this. It would be a totally lousy way to reduce the population OR introduce yet another vaccine program. Of course the drug companies are always eager to capitalize on anything to make a profit.
